& Five Tips to Make the Most of It
The Acropolis is the place to be this weekend!
The Nice Acropolis, to be precise. I’m very excited! One of the region’s best wine events just happens to be on this Friday, Saturday and Sunday and is a great way to kick start all your good wine resolutions for the year (such as drinking more wine from Alsace – definitely one of mine) as well as offering an excuse break any non-drinking resolutions which may still be floating around from the new year. It is February, after all!
The Nice edition of the Salon des Vins des Vignerons Indépendants is an annual wine exhibition which unites some of France’s premier independent producers from all over the country, under one roof. It’s a veritable smorgasbord of fine wine and a great way to discover new, interesting producers whose wines you wouldn’t normally have access to.
Walking in to see row after row of smiling winemakers, open bottles and empty spittoons may be a little overbearing for the first time visitor, so here are some handy hints for getting the most out of the show.
ONE: Before you go take some time to browse the producers present and appellations represented on the website and make a list of who you want to see and where they are located. It’s worth having a plan for the day, as, believe me, there’s such an array of choice that the question of where to start can be rather daunting. Plus, palate fatigue can set in early and there’s nothing worse than missing out on that amazing Chassagne Montrachet Blanc because you tasted too many Médoc’s.
TWO: An initiation to wine tasting will be held daily, where professionals will teach you (in French) all sorts of practical wine stuff, such as tasting technique, the best order to taste you wine in as well as guidelines for sensible drinking. They will also address the question of ‘what exactly is terroir’ as well as offering an introduction to main appellations and grape varieties. Held Friday (3pm, 5pm) Saturday (3pm, 5pm) and Sunday (11am, 3pm).
THREE: Considering the quality and value of the wines on offer, impromptu wine purchases are quite a common occurrence. Should you be bitten by the spending bug, don’t forget to take advantage of the complimentary chariot hire service which can accommodate between 4 – 40 cases of wine. Bring your car up to the entrance (your chariot will be securely guarded in your absence) and dedicated staff will help you load your purchases into your boot. It makes buying too easy!
FOUR: In previous years, the organisers have strategically placed very handy DIY breathalysers at the exit, meaning that, if you’ve forgotten to spit a few of your samples, it’s easy to confirm that you’re good to drive as you’re heading to your car.
FIVE: Make a purchase or leave your details with at least one producer, as you’ll find that next year they’ll send you an invite or two for the next edition of the show!
Entrance is €5, and includes a complimentary tasting glass, or download a complimentary ticket for two here!
